Word of the Day: Elohim

Another Hebrew name used for God, appearing in Genesis, and generally used before God directed Moses to identify Him as "I am that I am" (YHWH):

The earth and the heavens Elohim created in the beginning 

(English translation of the Hebrew version of Genesis 1:1)

The word Elohim is used both to describe "gods" and to describe the Supreme God. The basic meaning of the word denotes strength or power--an infinite God. 

Elohim is sometimes shortened to El and attached to other root words; such as El Shaddai (God Almighty), El Eyon (God Most High), and El Roi (God Who Sees). 

It is worth noting that many Biblical Angels have "El" in their name, e.g. Michael, Gabriel... denoting they come from God.

Even the word "Angel" is derived from Elohim, and means an attendant or messenger of God, attributed as coming from the Old English engel and French angele, which in turn come from the Greek Angelos (messenger)

Word of the Day: Jehovah

Another name given to or used for God. 

Where "Yahweh" is a spelling out of one possible pronunciation of "YHWH" ("I am that I am"--Exodus 3:14), multiple other pronunciations of YHWH exist, including "Jehovah", which appears in tsome translations of the Bible instead of Yahweh or LORD. 

Word of the Day: Yahweh

In the Jewish faith, God's name was too holy to write or speak. "Yahweh" is the pronunciation of YHWH, the Herbrew written version of "I am", from Moses' meeting of God in Exodus 3:14

And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.

Spelling out "YHWH" as "Yahweh" is believed by historians to originate from 1869, when it was theorized as a tetragrammaton of the Hebrew word hawah (one who is, the existing). Prior to this "YHWH" was written or printed, but pronounced "Yahweh".

Word of the Day: The Burning Bush

The story of Moses and the Burning Bush is about God revealing himself to Moses, by speaking to Moses from a burning bush: 

And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. (Exodus 3:2)

And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. (Exodus 3:4)

Many Christians understand this to mean that God took on the form of the Burning Bush to speak, or spoke through the burning bush. An alternative explanation for this event is that the Angel of the Lord was the one taking on the burning bush form, and God then spoke through the angel, in much the same way God spoke through a donkey in Numbers 22:28:

And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?

In Exodus 33:20, the reason for God not appearing directly before Moses is revealed:

And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.

This meeting between Moses and God would begin Moses' journey to free his people from Egyptian slavery, as documented in the Book of Exodus. 

Word of the Day: New Jerusalem

Following the White Throne Judgement, God brings a Holy city down to the new earth, from which he and Jesus Christ will reign for all of eternity;

(Revelation 20:2-3)

And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

(Revelation 20:22-23)

And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. 

And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. 

Word of the Day: White Throne Judgement

Also called Judgement Day, this final judgement of the unsaved taked place after the Millennial Kingdom and Second Resurrection:

(Revelation 20:11-12)

And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

Word of the Day: Second Resurrection

While not specifically called the "second resurrection", this  takes place sometime after Revelation 20:5's "first resurrection".

But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

The rapture includes the first resurrection, where dead saints (followers of Christ), brought back to life and, with living saints, are gathered from the earth. 

At the end of the Great Tribulation, Christ returns and rules the earth for 1000 years. Following this millennial reign, Satan is released from the pit and again rebels against God. After he is defeated everyone who has ever lived, not part of the first resurrection, is brought back to life to be judged:

Revelation 20:12:

And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
