Word of the Day: Church

A building where Christians worship God. Derives from the German "Kirche" and Greek kyriakon doma, meaning "the Lord's House".

In modern Christianity, "church" can also mean the body of Christian worshippers, or a group of Christians. This is used the same as "congregation".

In the new Testament, the body of believers is called the "ecclesia" in the original Greek, meaning assembly or group.

Modern Christians often claim that a Church is not a building, despite the origins of the word and the insistence to "go to church".
