The Bottomless Pit (or Abyss) is described in the Book of Revelation as the temporary dwelling place for fallen angels that will be unleashed after the sounding of the Fifth Angel's trumpet, during the Great Tribulation (Rev. 9:1-7).
After Christ's return, Satan and his followers are cast into the Pit for a thousand years (Rev. 20:1-3).
During the thousand years of Satan's imprisonment, Christ rules on earth (the Millennial Kingdom), then Satan is released and raises an army from the world to rebel again (Rev. 20:7-9). Satan and his followers are again defeated but this time get cast into the lake of fire and brimstone (Rev 20:10).
Some teach that the Pit is the same as Tartarus, the realm of the dead, described by Peter in 2 Peter 2:4;
For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;
...and in Jude, verse 6:
And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
